4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, study and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in class throughout the semester.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class. 

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks:

  • Exercises and text commentaries of etymology. 

  • Translation and linguistic commentary on an elementary anthology of Latin texts (prose and verse).

  • Readings: book or excerpts from Ovid’s (Metamorphoses).

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

  1. How to pronounce Latin. The laws of accent.
  2. The Latin as an inflectional language: declension and conjugation.
  3. Morphosyntax of the noun and the pronoun.
  4. Morphosyntax of the verb: modes and tenses.
  5. Morphosyntax of the infinitive and the participle.
  6. The simple clause. The Latin word-order.
  7. Vulgar Latin. Phonetic change from late spoken Latin to romance languages.
